They knew that they most likely needed a large victory in order to trump Flannan’s for the top spot.
In the end, a 20-point victory would be enough, and having led by 19 points at half-time, there was little doubt that they would get their revenge against an already eliminated Cashel outfit.
To their credit, Cashel were firmly drawn in the ‘Group of Death’ and, having tried in vain to upset both Ardscoil Rís and St. Flannan’s, their race was already run prior to lining out against their cross-county rivals.
The motivation all sat with Nenagh, who hunted goals early on. Five arrived in the opening half, where the half-time score read 5-8 to 0-4. The first green flag, on five minutes, came when Paul Cahalan raced onto an Eanna Tucker pass, before burying to the net.
Ninety seconds later, Billy O’Brien netted their second as they began to really punish every mistake from Cashel.
Captain Eoghan Doughan is a talent worth watching and he finished two more goals, on 13 and 23 minutes, with Patrick Hackett’s turnover key for the second. The final goal of the half, arrived on 30 minutes, when Cahalan bagged his second.
For Cashel, eight wides failed to help their chances, with missed frees from range once again hurting any chances they held. The pick of their scores, from Shane Cooney, arrived on the whistle.
It was much the same in the second half, with 1-4 to 0-1 in the opening ten minutes. The latest goal came from the stick of Emmet Jones, who was on hand to tidy up from close range. The best run for Cashel Community School soon followed, three points from James Finn and Senan Mackey (2).
The winners sprinted for the finishing line late on, scoring the final 1-6, with Doughan pulling the strings, while Eanna Tucker, Hugo Healy and Austin Duff were influential. The late scores came from Tucker, sub Eoin Grace, before the final of seven goals arrived in stoppage time.
Doughan found the run of Patrick Ryan, and the Borris-Ileigh clubman finished to the net. A quarter-final is to come early next month, with the draw awaited by Nenagh, who will play a runner-up from one of the four Harty Cup groups.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day in UL, Thurles CBS concluded their group phase with a 4-26 to 3-15 success over Scoil na Tríonóide Naofa, Doon, in what was a dead rubber for these sides. Thurles had already won group three and will ramp up for a quarter-final of their own.
