A man in his 40s remains in a serious condition in hospital following an assault in Waterford City last night, gardaí have confirmed.
The incident is understood to occurred at approximately 9.10pm on Friday night outside the Bridge Hotel on Merchant's Quay, with emergency services attending the scene.
The man was rushed to University Hospital Waterford for treatment of serious head injuries and remains hospitalised today.
An arrest has been made in relation to the incident, with a man in his 20s currently in Garda custody.
A statement from Gardaí reads: "Gardaí are investigating a serious of assault that occurred at Merchant's Quay, Waterford on Friday night 9th June 2023 at approximately 9.10p.m.
"One man aged in his 40s, was removed from the scene to University Hospital Waterford for treatment. He remains in a serious condition.
"A man aged in 20s, was arrested in relation to this incident and is currently detained at a Garda station in the South East Region".
A garda spokesperson confirmed that investigations ongoing.
The scene was cordoned off this morning.
