A major garda investigation is underway after a man died in hospital hours after he was assaulted over the weekend.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses following the fatal assault that occurred sometime between Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning.

"At approximately 3am on Sunday, gardaí were alerted by National Ambulance Service personnel to reports of a male (aged in his 30s) with serious injuries at an apartment in Lucan, County Dublin. The man was taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of his injuries. He passed away yesterday evening, Sunday, January 7 at approximately 6.30pm," said a garda spokesperson.

The services of the Office of the State Pathologist have been requested by investigating gardaí and a post-mortem is expected to take place today this Monday evening.

An incident room has been established at Lucan garda station in Dublin and this investigation is being led by a Senior Investigating Officer.

Gardaí are appealing to the public for information in relation to this incident.

They have also confirmed that the injured male travelled via taxi from the Allenton area in Tallaght, Dublin 24 to an address in the Shackleton residential area of Lucan, County Dublin in the early hours of Sunday.

Any road users who were travelling in the vicinity of either location and who may have camera footage (including dash cam) are asked to make this available.
