Ireland has condemned Israel’s ‘prolonged’ occupation of the Palestinian Land and of “sustained and serious” violence against Palestinians at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Attorney General of Ireland, Rossa Fanning, said that Ireland believes Israel had exceeded the limits to self-defence set out in international law in its response in Gaza to the October 7 Hamas attack.
In the Hague-based court this morning, Fanning said this was evidenced by the “spiralling death toll”, the “destruction” of homes and the “displacement of up to 2 million people", of what she called the “ensuing humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.
Fanning said that the law of state responsibility requires Israel to end the serious breaches, including by reversing its settlement activity in Occupied Palestinian Land, as well as making reparation for the damage caused.
