President Michael D. Higgins is due to be discharged from hospital this Thursday evening.

The president was brought to Saint James's hospital in Dublin last Thursday, February 29, for precautionary tests after feeling unwell.

He is expected to be discharged later this afternoon and will return to Áras an Uachtaráin.

A statement from the Áras on Monday said that the results "indicated no serious or long-term concerns for the President's health" but that the 82-year-old would remain in hospital  for his blood pressure to be monitored.

While in hospital, he considered and signed two bills: Local Government (Mayor of Limerick) and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, and the Social Welfare and Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said that he plans to meet President Higgins on Friday for their regular meeting to discuss affairs of state at the Áras, and that they had spoken by phone since he was hospitalised last week.

The President has been advised to limit the extent of his public engagements over the coming weeks after recommending a "short period of recuperation".
