On Thursday, December 19, Cllr JP O’Meara was formally co-opted into Tipperary County Council after being selected by Fianna Fáil to fill the gap left by his brother Ryan O’Meara TD who was elected to the Dáil last month, representing Fianna Fáil in Tipperary North in this year’s General Election.
Deputy Ryan O’Meara is certainly a loss to the Nenagh municipal district, only a county councillor for a short time, he quickly became a strong voice in the Nenagh council chambers and was a great support to his fellow councillors on voicing the issues of the local area. However, his older brother JP is an ideal choice to replace him. One of Deputy O’Meara’s key assets that surely helped play a part in seeing him elected is his approachability and his relatability and these are qualities that he shares with his brother JP.
Cllr JP O’Meara is probably most well known in the community in his role as a DJ for local venues and events making him a familiar face to anyone that has ever frequented the Nenagh night life scene. This level of familiarity will make the transition to becoming a more public personality a great deal easier than going in as an unknown quantity.
So, although Deputy O’Meara may have moved onto Leinster House, the people of Nenagh and the surrounds can rest assured knowing that a member of the O’Meara clan from Toomevara will be representing them well in the County Council chambers.
At the final meeting of the Nenagh municipal district for 2024, Cllr JP O’Meara’s new colleagues began their meeting by welcoming him to the table: “I want to start by welcoming our newest member Cllr JP O’Meara. It’s a very rewarding day and I have no doubt you will do a fantastic job.” began Nenagh Cathaoirleach Cllr Fiona Bonfield.
Cllr John Carroll echoed that sentiment: “I want to give a hearty welcome to you and I hope you’re stay is long and fruitful.”
Cllr Louise Morgan Walsh said: “I know JP a long time, he is a family man and a hard worker and I know he’ll do a fantastic job.”
Cllr Pamela Quirke O’Meara agreed: “I know JP a long time too and I want to welcome him to the Nenagh MD, he will do a fantastic job.”
Cllr Michael O’Meara welcomed him joking: “When I started I was the only O’Meara and now we’ve had three in quick succession.”
Cllr Joe Hannigan said “Welcome to the Nenagh MD and I want to wish your brother Ryan well in the Dáil.”
Finally Cllr Phyll Bugler commented: “I want to welcome you JP and I wish you the best in your new role as councillor.
