Nenagh Tourist Office has proudly added a new tribute to the late Shane MacGowan, former frontman of The Pogues, with a framed Shannon Rovers GAA commemorative jersey now on display. The jersey, which joins the existing portraits of MacGowan on display in the tourist office, holds special significance as it features an image of his great-grandfather, John Lynch, on the sleeve. Lynch was a founding member and the first chairman of the Shannon Rovers club—an association that Shane MacGowan was immensely proud of.

MacGowan’s deep-rooted connection to Shannon Rovers was evident even at his funeral in December 2023 at St. Mary of the Rosary Church, Nenagh, where a Shannon Rovers jersey was presented on the altar. With images of the ceremony broadcast worldwide, interest in the club’s jersey soared, leading to a wave of international requests. This overwhelming demand inspired the creation of a special commemorative club jersey.

The commemorative jersey is available in three colours—red, white, and black—alongside a limited-edition Tipperary commemorative jersey released last Christmas. Each jersey is adorned with the lyrics of MacGowan’s song The Broad Majestic Shannon, which nostalgically captures his childhood memories in Carney Commons, within the Shannon Rovers parish.

Now taking pride of place in the Nenagh Tourist Office, the jersey is expected to attract visitors eager to celebrate MacGowan’s legacy. In recent months, Nenagh and the Lough Derg area have become must-visit destinations for fans tracing the singer’s roots and exploring locations linked to his music.

As part of the unveiling, current Shannon Rovers club chairman Paul Tiernan, along with club member and first cousin of Shane, Lisa Mulvihill, were pictured with Shane’s sister Siobhan MacGowan and Victoria Lee of the Nenagh Tourist Office.

For those interested in viewing this special display, the Nenagh Tourist Office is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm The commemorative jerseys can be purchased online at Shannon Rovers Club Store.
