The developers of the proposed Silvermines Hydro Project have officially launched their public engagement programme, beginning on Friday, May 16, with a call for local and national stakeholders to get involved in shaping the future of this landmark renewable energy development.
The engagement programme begins with the publication of the PCI Project Brochure, now available on the project website at www.silvermineshydro.ie.

The brochure outlines the vision behind the proposed pumped hydroelectric power station at the former Magcobar mine site in Silvermines — a project that could play a vital role in Ireland’s transition to clean, secure, and flexible energy infrastructure.
As a central part of this first phase of engagement, members of the public are invited to attend a Public Exhibition to learn more about the project and contribute feedback, on Friday, June 6, from 3pm to 8pm, and Saturday, June 7, from 12pm to 4pm.
The session will take place in Hickey’s Lounge, Silvermines Village.
The exhibition will present the initial concept design of the hydroelectric station and give visitors the opportunity to meet the project team, learn about the environmental and community considerations, and ask questions.
Feedback gathered will inform the development of detailed proposals to be presented in a second public exhibition in Autumn 2025.
“This project has the potential to bring long-term environmental, energy, and economic benefits, not only to the Silvermines area but nationally,” said Karl Cashen, Community Engagement lead for the project.
“We are committed to engaging openly with the public from the very beginning, and we encourage everyone to take part, ask questions, and have their say.”

The Silvermines Hydro Project is currently listed as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) by the European Union, recognising its strategic importance in strengthening cross-border energy infrastructure and grid stability.
The June exhibition is key component of the ongoing consultation process, with further opportunities for community input throughout 2025.
