'Disturbing find' in Tipperary countryside after 80 fish heads dumped illegally

Cllr Pamela Quirke O'Meara raised the issue at the June Tipperary county council meeting

Tipperary Tipperary Tipperary

At the June meeting of the full Tipperary County Council, Cllr Pamela Quirke O'Meara told councillors and council staff that a bag full of "something like 80 fish heads" was recently found illegally dumped in the Silvermines area.

Addressing members of the environment section of the council Cllr Quirke O'Meara said: "Recently in the Silvermines area, there was a couple of bags found by the Silvermines Tidy Town committee who were out trying to keep the area clean and tidy. It was very unusual find, the dumping of fish heads.

"I suppose, I want to thank the environment section who went and investigated it but it was a very disturbing find for people in the community. There was something like 80 fish heads in one bag and a few days later there were other parts of fish dumped in the area as well.

"This was obviously very smelly and very difficult for people to deal with so I just want to say thanks for the speedy action of the litter warden because they had to go through the bags and find out if there was any evidence as to who might have done this.

"Unfortunately, they didn't find any evidence and I suppose it was at the cost of the county council then to remove it.

"So, I just want to request that more illegal dumping signage be put up around the Silvermines village.

"I know there is an ongoing issue with dumping in villages around Tipperary but you know this is getting more sinister now because this type of dumping is disgusting really, particularly at a time when our local communities are working so hard with Tidy Towns coming up."
