30 Tipperary landowners have been hit with a compulsory purchase order (CPO) after a major road realignment on the Borrisoleigh to Nenagh road at Latteragh was sanctioned.

A CPO gives certain bodies (for example a local authority, highways agency, development corporation) the legal right to obtain land or property without the consent of the owner.

The project is expected to proceed at a total cost of €30 million after a tendering process, a preferred contractor has been notified of their tender acceptance.

The Department has approved the provision of €20 million to fund the civil works contractor.

The preferred civil works contractor has a two-year programme to complete the project.

A further €4 million had already been approved to fund the design fee, consultants and landowner compensation.

All the affected landowners have received offers of compensation, a number have accepted the offers and have already been paid.

The majority are still in negotiations with respective valuers.

Deputy Michael Lowry TD released a statement to say he is "delighted with this project because the Latteragh road is a major piece of vital infrastructure which will be dramatically improved after this investment".
