Kildangan man Ben Banaghan is currently undertaking one of the most ambitious personal challenges of his life: a 570km (355-mile) run across Iceland, aiming to complete the journey in just 7.5 to 8 days.
This incredible feat is not just a test of endurance, it carries a greater purpose. Ben is running to raise funds and awareness for Construction Sport, a mental health charity dedicated to supporting people working in the construction industry.
“Having spoken to the lads at Construction Sport more than a few times, I’m so happy to be able to help them,” said Ben. “100% of donations will go directly to Construction Sport. The money raised will support mental health initiatives in the construction industry and help maintain the urgent support services they provide for individuals in need.”
Construction Sport has become a vital resource for workers in the construction sector, offering both preventative and urgent mental health support. Ben is committed to highlighting the impact of their work and hopes his run will encourage others to engage with the charity and its services.
Having started Monday, September 8, 2025, Ben is running from Iceland’s northernmost point, Hraunhafnartangi, to its southern tip at Dyrhólaey. Beyond the physical challenge, he will attempt to break the official Guinness World Record for this route, currently held by Luke Forelle and Elliot Berenger at 9 days, 7 hours, and 54 minutes. Ben aims to complete it in around 8 days.
His ambitious goal is to raise £250,000 for Construction Sport, a charity dedicated to changing the stigma around mental health in the construction industry. “Although the run will be a big challenge, I’ll feel most supported by people donating and sharing this challenge with friends, family, and colleagues,” said Ben. “Every pound raised goes directly to Construction Sport to help break down barriers, open minds, and provide real support to those who need it most.”
Ben’s Iceland run promises to be an extraordinary test of endurance, determination, and generosity, proving that personal challenges can make a real difference in the lives of others.
