Tom Grey, Sinead Grennan and Clive Jones at Bloom
Nenagh garden designer Tom Grey has been awarded a bronze medal at Bloom for his dementia garden design.
The festival kicked off this Thursday and Tom was among the first of the medal winners at the festival in Dublin's Phoenix Park.
Tom's garden, Moments in Time -Dementia: Understand Together Garden, was designed by the Dementia Friendly Garden (DFG) Team and sponsored by Dementia: Understand Together Campaign.
Tom is a Research Fellow at TrinityHaus, Trinity College Dublin and who, with his architectural background, has undertaken many age-friendly and dementia-friendly design projects.
The project is a collaboration between landscape gardeners Newtown Saunders Ltd, university research centre TrinityHaus and dementia training organisation Sonas apc,
The garden reflects Dementia: Understand Together Campaign’s message of an Ireland that embraces and involves those who are on the dementia, serving as a template for pop-up dementia-friendly gardens in community parks and public spaces.
A gallery installation features photographs depicting family, social roles and community as a reminder of the richness of human life and the many memories and skills that a person retains, despite dementia.
Visual cues provide guidance and support, while physical objects act as focal points for communication.
The judging panels for Bloom 2018 comprised of 14 Irish and international horticultural experts, who announced 113 awards for show garden designers, nurseries, floral artists and amateur garden designers including 35 Gold, 22 Silver Gilt, 19 Silver, 24 Bronze and 13 certificates of commendation.
Bord Bia’s Bloom continues at the Phoenix Park Dublin until Monday, June 4. Tickets are on sale on Ticketmaster and can also be purchased on the gate. Onsite tickets with concessions for during the week start from €21.
