Dr Louis Bernard Daniel Courtney
Tributes have poured in following the recent death of a well-respected doctor from Tipperary.
Dr Louis Bernard Daniel Courtney KM passed peacefully on the 2nd of March 2026, at home, holding the hands of his devoted wife, Betty, and surrounded by his loving family.
Formerly of Summerhill, Nenagh, county Tipperary, Dr Courtney served as an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Cavan since 1972, and over the same period, served as Coroner for North County Tipperary.

He will be remembered as a dedicated husband and father, and a tireless advocate for women and infant health.
Predeceased by his father and mother, Dr Louis & Elizabeth Courtney, and siblings, Eileen, Dr William, Jim and Archbishop Michael.
Dearly missed by his wife, Betty, his children, Danielle, William, Fára, Rebecca, Caitlín, Louis and Jonathan, his sons-in-law, Éanna, Gary, Stephen and Kevin, his grandchildren, Ned, Ailidh, Emy and Arnie, and his sisters, Kathleen and Mary.
The death of Dr Louis has deeply upset many people who knew and cherished him, with countless messages pouring in from all over on RIP.ie.

One mourner said: "Dr. Louis was a wonderful doctor and gynaecologist. Mother and baby were his primary concern. He delivered my three babies. May he rest in peace".
Another person said: "I was a young mother to be at a time when it was frowned upon and shameful but Dr Courtney never made me feel that way, he was kind and extremely professional and made me feel like any other mother in the ward.
I was very grateful to him for not feeling judged or ashamed. I will always look back and be grateful to him. May his gentle soul Rest in peace now he is with the Lord".

"Condolences to the Courtney family on the sad passing of Dr Louis.
He was an absolute gentleman and a gifted physician who brought so many children into the world safely and mothers lives saved. If only his kind was still in practice hospitals would be better places. Rest easy Dr Louis your work on earth is gone," another person said.
"Our sincere condolences to Betty, his children, grandchildren and extended family on the sad passing of your husband, father, grandfather and family, Dr Louis. We are most grateful to Dr Courtney, as he brought our seven sons safely into this world.
A great doctor and a pure gentleman. Thinking of you all at this difficult time. May Dr Louis rest in peace," another person said.
