RIP: Tipperary mourns loss of GAA stalwart and major figure in local and county sports

Roscrea was saddened to learn of the passing of very well known and respected local man Mick Minogue on Friday (Dec 13), who played a major role in local and county GAA and in the community of his hometown.
Originally from Knockshegowna and resident of Newline in Roscrea for many years, Mick was predeceased by his beloved wife Maisie and is deeply mourned by his loving sons Paul, David, Aidan and Michael Jnr., his daughters Carmel, Valerie and Ciara, his sisters Teresa and Sheila (USA), his beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, extended family, neighbours and wide circle of friends.
He was President of Roscrea GAA Club and played a major role in county level sports and in a tribute on Saturday, the Tipperary County GAA Board said: "He was one of our county’s greatest-ever mentors who had a remarkable career both on and off the field.

"The winner of five County Senior Hurling titles in 1968, 69, 70, 72 and 73, he was also a key member of the Munster and All-Ireland club-winning team in 1971.
"He continued to manage club and county teams in Tipperary, including winning a memorable senior hurling title with Moneygall in 1975. "He led Tipperary minors to Munster and All-Ireland glory in 1976. He served as a senior selector in the late 70s and early 80s, winning a National League in 1979.
"His greatest contribution was at Under 21 level, working with All-Ireland-winning teams in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1985 and 1989", Tipperary GAA Board said.

In a loving tribute, Roscrea GAA Club said: "We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of our Club President Mick Minogue this morning.
"A native of Knockshegowna Mick came to work and live in Roscrea and soon became a very significant player and regular on Roscrea Senior Hurling teams.
"A tough and uncompromising midfielder renowned for his work rate and aerial ability he went on to win five County Senior Hurling titles in 1968, 69, 70, 72 & 73. He was a key member of Munster & All Ireland club winning team in 1971.

"His love & passion for the game meant that when his playing days came to an end he would become a mentor and manager of many club and county teams. A shrewd observer and judge of hurling and admired for his man management skills he enjoyed remarkable success with a variety of teams.
"He worked with teams at all levels in Roscrea and managed neighbours Moneygall to win a County Senior title in 1975. His abilities were soon recognised & throughout the 70’s & 80’s he worked with many Tipperary teams making an immeasurable contribution & enjoying great success.
"He led Tipperary minors to Munster & All Ireland glory in 1976. He served as a senior selector in the late 70’s and early eighties winning a National League in 1979. His greatest contribution was at U21 level working with All Ireland winning teams in 1979, 1980, 1981, 1985 & 1989.
"He served his club with great loyalty on the committee for many years and as Runaí for a number of those years. In more recent times he took great pride in being Club President.

"His passion for hurling, Roscrea and Tipperary burned brightly right up until his passing. A jovial character with a great sense of humour he loved to analyse the latest game or style of play.
"Roscrea and Tipperary have lost one of their finest sons. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann. I measc na nGael go mairfidh sé. We extend our deepest sympathy to Paul, Daithí, Carmel, Aidan, Valerie, Ciara and Michael his sisters Teresa and Sheila, his grandchildren and great grandchildren and all his relatives, neighbours and friends", Roscrea GAA Club said.
