On Saturday, 12 July, marks a truly remarkable milestone in Roscrea, as local man Bobby Williams, aged 87, officially retires from Patterson’s Hardware, having given an extraordinary 70 years of service to the business and the community.
Bobby first stepped behind the counter of Patterson’s on Main Street, Roscrea, in April 1955, working alongside his uncle, Tom Patterson. What began as a family connection soon became a lifelong vocation, with Bobby becoming a familiar and much-loved figure to generations of local customers.
Over the decades, Bobby witnessed the changing face of Roscrea’s Main Street, yet remained a constant presence—always ready with a helping hand, a cheerful chat, and, more often than not, a good story or two.

Speaking ahead of his retirement, Bobby shared his deep appreciation:
“I’ve enjoyed every moment of my working life. I want to sincerely thank every customer I’ve met over the years, for the fun, the craic, the chats, and all the kindness. It’s been genuinely appreciated.”
While Bobby may be officially retiring, those who know him won’t be surprised to hear he plans to pop into the shop from time to time—likely with the same welcoming smile and wit that made him such a central figure at Patterson’s for so long.
His retirement is not just the close of a remarkable career, but a moment for the Roscrea community to celebrate a true local legend. We wish Bobby health, happiness, and plenty more good chats in the years ahead.
