Last week saw a number of volunteers join the admirable Roscrea Tidy Towns group an engage in a day of litter picking around the town with some notable results.

So much so that Roscrea Tidy Towns issued the following statement in response to the good work and sense of community achieved on the day in the town:

“Ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid” which translates to “In the shelter of each other we live” or “In the shadow of each other we prosper”.

This Irish proverb, highlights our deep interdependence, meaning people rely on each other for support, community, and survival.

This is so true of Tidy Towns work. We are all volunteers and rely on each other to work together to complete any project we undertake.

It is wonderful, then, when others who are not part of our group appreciate what we are trying to do and lend us their support.

We are most grateful to the workers on our CE Scheme who complete so much of the day-to-day tasks on our behalf; for all the help we got from those residing in both Rackett Hall and Corville House as well as Roscrea Lions Club.

They have made the work less difficult on us all.

Last Friday, 12 th September, a practical illustration of this proverb took place when fourteen volunteers from Turas Nua gave their morning to help Roscrea Tidy Towns as part of their “Community Day”.

A major litter-pick was undertaken with eight bags filled over three hours.
