Tipperary South TD Mattie McGrath has called for an urgent review of forced retirement rules that are causing staff shortages and putting pressure on vital community services — particularly in school transport and Community Employment (CE) Schemes.
Deputy McGrath highlighted two key issues currently affecting local areas: "I raised two common issues being faced due to forced retirement ages.
"School bus drivers are restricted by Bus Éireann to drive school busses after the age of 70 despite being fit and medically able to do so.

"This restriction is leading to shortages in bus drivers and difficulties filling school bus routes due to this policy.
"School bus drivers are part time and split shift roles that in the main do not suit most younger people as the hours of work are insufficient to meet their needs.
"CE Scheme workers are also forced to retire at 66.
"Again these workers are providing very valuable services in their communities and the schemes are having huge difficulties filling these positions meaning that local communities are losing vital services.
"We should be giving these people the choice to continue working should they be fit, able and happy to do so."

He explained that school bus driving is a part-time, split-shift role, which often doesn’t suit younger workers due to the limited hours.
Deputy McGrath also raised concerns about Community Employment (CE) Scheme workers, who are currently required to retire at 66, just as they reach pension age.
He said that in both cases, the issue isn’t about forcing anyone to work longer — it’s about giving people the choice.
Deputy McGrath is now urging Government and relevant agencies to review these age restrictions and listen to the concerns of local communities.
