Tipperary's Rockwell College has progressed to the quarter-finals of the Munster Schools Philosophical Senior Debating competition after testing encounters with accomplished debating schools including Scoil Mhuire gan Smál (Blarney), Loreto Fermoy and Bandon Grammar.
Rockwell’s Bill Fitzgerald and Ben O’Sullivan, and Erika Magan and Varvara Artiukh contested the motion that ‘This house would ban all art deemed grossly offensive to the public’ in the first round, while Cathal Flannery and Ben McDonald debated ‘The privatisation of space exploration’.
In the second round, Bill and Ben progressed to the quarter-final, having proposed the motion that ‘This house would secularise all primary and secondary schools’. The second team of Erika and Varvara also won their heat, arguing the motion that ‘The aid given to third world countries would depend on their human rights record’. Cathal also went through as best individual.
