St Michael’s 4 – 0 Wilderness Rovers
St Michael’s warmed up for next weekend’s FAI Junior Cup final, with a good win over Wilderness Rovers in this Premier League clash on Sunday last, but they were made to wait until the second half before eventually wearing down the Clonmel side, who have enjoyed a successful return to the top table in the TSDL this season.
The first half was rather lacklustre, with only a few half chances created, the closest being a shot by Ed O’Dwyer midway through the half that was gathered at Oisin Lavin’s near post.
The second half saw the home side up a gear and they hit the front five minutes into the second half, when David Slattery did well to finish a half volley to the net from an Ed O Dwyer cross.
They made it two minutes before the hour mark when Jimmy Carr found Shane Ryan in space and he made no mistake from six yards out.
With players hoping to impress the management team ahead of next week’s FAI showpiece game, David Slattery made Lavin work hard to keep out a headed effort in the 62nd minute, and Joey Mulcahy unluckily shot wide ten minutes later.
But the pressure that had been building, finally told on the visitors, when the home side added their third goal, 12 minutes from time, thanks to a well-taken shot by Russell Quirke.
A last minute goal from Rhys Byron finished out the game, and kept the Saints title push firmly on track for another season.
