Carrick-on-Suir boxer Chantelle Robinson won a bronze medal in her first international competition representing Ireland in the Eindhoven Box Cup in the Netherlands.
The 20-year-old, who boxes with St Saviour’s Boxing Club in Waterford city, received a big welcome home from family and friends last Tuesday, May 30 following her success at the international tournament two days earlier.
Chantelle won the bronze medal in the 50kg women’s weight division of the Eindhoven Cup, reaching the semi-final where she was defeated by a Norwegian boxer. She was a member of a large Irish team of male and female boxers who competed in the competition and brought home 14 medals.
She told The Nationalist she was delighted to get the experience of taking part in an international competition and to receive a bronze medal. And she was overwhelmed by the welcome home she received at Treacy Park in Carrick-on-Suir last week.
“It was lovely. I had no clue at all about it. I was very shocked,” she said.
Chantelle earned her place on the Irish boxing team for the Eindhoven Cup after being crowned All-Ireland Under 22 women’s champion in the 50kg weight class at the National Stadium in Dublin earlier this year.
