Premier League champions Peake Villa will be hoping to bounce back from last weekend's heavy defeat by Villa FC from Waterford when they face Gorey Rangers in the last eight of the FAI Junior Cup
MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP QUARTER-FINAL
PEAKE VILLA 0 VILLA FC (WATERFORD) 4
Sunday was a day to forget for the current TSDL soccer champions Peake Villa, who despite playing well fell to a heavy defeat against their namesakes Villa FC of Waterford.
Both teams sounded each other out in the first twenty minutes, with defences on top, and neither was able to fashion a decent chance of note.
The home side had the first real sight of goal in the 23rd minute when a Keith Cahill corner found Evan Mc Cormack at the back post, and although his header looked like it was going in, it hit a defender’s legs on the line and was cleared to safety.
Had that found the net things may have turned out differently, especially as it was the Waterford Villa who broke the deadlock nine minutes before the break when a cross was met by the head of Dean Walsh, and he headed powerfully home
Peake did have one more chance to get level before half time, but Pippy Carroll’s shot just went the wrong side of the post and wide.
Peake came out in the second half with some purpose and came close to equalising on a few occasions, with the Waterford side’s defenders doing very well at the back to clear their lines on numerous occasions.
However, the momentum changed in the 65th minute when a mistake in the home team’s defence saw Aaron O’ Connor capitalise, and he made no mistake to make it two-nil.
Though Peake tried their best to get back into the game, they committed too many players into attack and were picked off twice in the final two minutes, leaving them defeated on a 4-0 scoreline that barely reflected the course of the game.
However, that is cup football and Peake will now lick their wounds and head to Wexford to play Gorey Rangers this Sunday when they will be hoping for better luck in the quarter-final of the FAI Junior Cup, a match that kicks off at 2pm.
