Last Saturday was a long day for the CRC junior rowers at Castleconnell Sprint Regatta. The bus departed Clonmel at 6.30 am and didn't get back until 9.45 pm after a busy days racing on the idyllic waters of the Shannon. Conditions were dead calm over the 5 lanes on the 500m course and it provided the rowers an opportunity to sharpen their starts.
Some of our juniors are coming into great form, none more so than Sam Fleming what had wins in the mens j18 2x with Keelan Hogan, the mens j18 4x + with Brian Hurley, Rory Keely, Oisin Walsh and Ciaran Hickey in the cox's seat and capped it off with a win in the Junior 18 1x.
Darragh Noonan and Benjamin Wall were too good for the opposition in the mens J16 2x and later Benjamin was edged out of the second spot in the mens j16 1x. Our enthusiastic mens j14 4x+ of Cian Gregory, Dominykas Valuzis, Edward Wall, Chris Kane and Bobby Power coxing narrowly lost out to the local St. Michael's crew.
Kate Meehan is knocking on the door for her first win in the J18 1x, but again the local knowledge of the Castleconnell sculler proved to be the deciding factor.
Paul Nugent held off the challenge of old foes from Galway to win the mens masters 1x at Castleconnell Spring Regatta on Saturday last.
The dog was 5th at the greyhound track on Friday night but Paul Nugent was first on Saturday morning when competing in the mens masters 1x. Breaking smartly from Trap 2, Paul opened up an early lead on his old foes from Galway. With the lactic acid flowing freely through his muscles, the big question was could he get home. With 1/2 length to spare, the finish line came just in time.
Siofra O'Loughlin and Anna Kiely are coming together nicely in the 2x and should be pleased with their second place against quality opposition.
Our masters womens 4x- of Sandra Wall, Michelle Gregory, Denise Fleming and Branwen Kelly were denied a win by Tribesmen. Later Sandra and Michelle went in the 2x. Giving a five-second headstart to Tralee, they were always going to be chasing the game in this one. Their luck changed in the 4x+ when they combined with Michelle O'Halloran and Nicola Keating and the versatile Denise Fleming steering for an emphatic victory.
Our mens masters 2x of Andy Ryan and Donal Lyons were sandwiched in the middle of 2 Galway crews. After an epic battle all the way they have to be satisfied with their third place.
SYMPATHY
The club would like to extend sympathies to former captain Michael Somers on the sad passing of his wife Sally. May she RIP.
NEXT UP IS LEE REGATTA
It looks like the next stop on our tour is Lee Regatta on Saturday, May 18.
