Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett returns to the winner's enclosure in France

Sam Bennett is hoping to get the nod for the Tour de France, which begins at the end of next month

Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett returned to form with his first win of the year on Wednesday, when he won the bunch sprint on the second stage of the Four Days of Dunkirk race in France.

The Decathlon-AG2R-La Mondiale Team rider was third on the opening stage on Tuesday.

His win on the 184.3 kilometres stage from Wimereux to Abbeville saw him installed as race leader, with four stages remaining.

The runner-up was Paul Penhoët (Groupama-FDJ) and Sasha Weemaes (Bingoal WB) was third, with Pascal Ackermann (UAE Team Emirates) in fourth.

33-year-old Bennett is chasing a return to the Tour de France in July after a four-year absence.

The Tour, in which the Carrick-on-Suir man famously won the green jersey for the points classification, as well as two stages, in 2020, gets under way in Italy on June 26.
