Huge crowd shows up for re-unveiling of Fenian plaque in Tipperary

A great crowd turned out in the yard of the McAuley Centre on Sunday morning last for the Templemore Heritage Heritage Week event.

This year marked the re-unveiling of the old Fenian plaque which was taken down some years ago when Templemore Voluntary Housing embarked on their house building scheme.

Templemore Heritage Group, a sub-committee of Templemore Community Development Association would like to say a sincere thanks to Fr Conor Hayes and the McAuley Centre committee for permission to re-erect the plaque on their grounds.

There is also some nice signage now accompanying the plaque outlining some details.

Chairman of Templemore Heritage Group, Ronan Loughnane, then gave a brief lecture on Hospital Street, which delved into the history of this very important stretch of road in Templemore.

Buddy Fogarty was instrumental in the erection of the plaque in 1967 to mark the centenary of the Fenian rising in 1867 and his son Aidan was on hand to proudly re-unveil the plaque.

This was followed by a beautiful rendition of “Let Erin remember” played on the pipes by Joe Barry and Martin Fogarty.

Thanks also to CJ and Mary D’Estelle-Roe for all their help in organising the event and to all who captured the event on video and phone.

Community is a very strong word and Templemore’s certainly came to the fore on Sunday morning.
