Local committee requests funding for restoration of Tipperary memorial garden

Durlas Éile Eliogarty Memorial Committee has penned a letter to request funding from the North Tipperary Development Company.

The letter, written by William Ryan of the Durlas Éile Eliogarty Memorial Committee, requests funding for a community-led restoration and enhancement project at St Mary’s Memorial Garden.

The letter reads: “I am writing to respectfully request funding support from North Tipperary Development Company for a community-led restoration and enhancement project at St. Mary’s Memorial Garden, Thurles, as represented by the Durlas Éile Elogarty Memorial Garden. Committee.

“This site holds deep historical and cultural significance for the people of Thurles and the wider North Tipperary area. It commemorates Irish Soldiers and Thurles natives in other armies and peacekeepers who served in various international missions, and it is a place of reflection and remembrance for our community.

“We have prepared a detailed Schedule of Works to restore and improve the memorial garden, ensuring its continued dignity and accessibility for future generations. The proposed works include:

-Removal of approx. 9m of flower bed and existing memorial (Lebanon Mortar Shell);
-Removal of existing information plaque on Lebanese Shell;
-Supply and erection of 2 new flag poles;
-Construction of wall to accommodate future memorials;
-Installation of one full memorial (Kuwait) to match existing five;
-Repairs to existing stone wall for structural stability;
-Supply and fitting of paving flags to match existing levels;
-Plastering of entire wall with plinths and bands to match existing finishes;
-Construction of new wall to house relocated Lebanon Shell memorial;
-Erection of stop-end wall at end of memorial line;
-Completion of stonework on existing WWI and WWII memorials;
-Repointing of existing paving flags throughout the area;
-Restoration of memorial lettering where faded;
-Repointing of mortar on existing memorials as needed;
-Erection of temporary canopy over two aerial guns during works;
-Sandblasting of two mortar guns onsite;
-Specialist repainting of both guns.
