Councillor calls for 'a more common sense and human approach' to how homeless services run in Tipperary

Cathaoirleach of Tipperary Cahir Cashel Municipal District Cllr John Crosse asked for “a more common sense and human approach” in relation to how homeless services run in the county.

Cllr Crosse told the MD at their December meeting he had a query to make "in relation to a homeless man from Tipperary Town who has been offered a 9-9 homeless service in Clonmel."

Cllr Crosse said that acommodation was found in Cashel for the man to live in, but he couldn’t move in as he was tied to being in the 9-9 service in Clonmel. Cllr Crosse made the point it was unfair to have him live far away from everything he knows and wanted the council to take a more flexible approach to the situation.

Breda from the housing replied to John Crosse saying “I know the homeless unit are aware of that and their intention is to at some stage provide homeless accommodation, I will take it back to the unit but at the minute that’s their guidelines, the 9-9.”

“There’s no real sympathy or human approach taken to this latest issue” said Crosse.

A council official from the Housing Department replied “I appreciate that but we have to be consistent”

Mr Crosse finished by saying he understood but to expect someone from Tipperary Town or Cashel to go live at the 9-9 homeless service in Clonmel and travel back and forth everyday was a lot to ask.

“I got him a place in Cashel but it wasn’t allowed because of the 9-9 situation that he was tied into, which I think was very very unfair. I think it needs to be changed and a more flexible approach taken to it” concluded Cllr Crosse.
