A motion not to nominate anyone, proposed by Fianna Fáil whip Michael Smith and seconded by Fine Gael’s Willie Kennedy, was narrowly defeated 20–19 after Fine Gael councillors Mary Hanna Hourigan and Mark Fitzgerald broke ranks.
That opened the way for nominations, with Sheridan defeating Cork councillor Kieran McCarthy by 17 votes to 3, with 16 abstentions and 4 absent.
Sheridan, who already has Kerry County Council’s backing, now needs support from two more councils in the coming week to secure a place on October’s ballot.
