A visit from the Irish Coast Guard’s Rescue 117 helicopter to Ballyneale GAA pitch on 10th April was an educational treat for the students of the village's national school and pre-school as well as local residents.

All the pupils of Ballyneale NS and Jane's Montessori & After School Care walked down to Ballyneale Community Field to watch the rescue helicopter’s arrival from its base at Waterford Airport.

When the helicopter landed, the crew, co-pilot Tom Kelly, captain Mick Liddy, winch man Peter O'Neill and winch operator Neill McAdam spoke to those gathered about the helicopter, described how it operated and explained the important work of the Irish Coast Guard.

The children were invited to have a look inside the helicopter and were shown the vital equipment used in rescue operations.

Before departing, an amazing demonstration of rescue from the air was carried out by the crew.

Ballyneale National School said it wished to thank the Irish Coast Guard helicopter crew and parent Catherine Kennedy for organising such a special day.

“We hope it will last in the memories of the children and community for some time to come.”
