Carrick-on-Suir Library's community garden team is looking for more volunteers

Carrick-on-Suir Library community garden team volunteers are looking for more people to join them in the maintenance of this beautiful thriving garden filled with plants, herbs and vegetables for all to enjoy.

A polytunnel, donated by the Suir Valley Drug Community Based Initiative Programme (SVDP), and set up by members of the Carrick Men’s Shed, is now filled with vine tomatoes, many lettuce varieties, peppers, melon plants, courgettes, runner beans and cabbages.

Raised beds are nurturing the growth of rhubarb, strawberries, kale and an abundance of culinary and medicinal herbs against a backdrop of mature apple, pear and plum trees.

Herbs have also been planted along the boundary wall and anyone passing by is free to pick some.

A committee, which includes members of Carrick Men’s Shed and Carrick Lions Club, meet at the Library on Fridays at 11am to discuss the garden, work in it and relax and have refreshments.

They plan is to add many more raised beds and encourage local people to come along and plant their own selection of vegetables and herbs.

You will be advised and guided on planting and maintaining the community garden or, indeed, your own personal growing patch.

Everyone is welcome to join the team on Friday mornings.

And if the interest is there, the gardeners can arrange to meet on an evening that suits people.

Whether you are a keen gardener or an absolute beginner you will always be welcome to join the team or just pop along to help out.

For further information contact Carrick Library: at (051) 640591.
