Tipperary students to showcase their design in Junk Kouture regional finals

Cashel Community School students share their inspiration for their design 'No M-Alice In This Palace'

Tipperary students to showcase their design in Junk Kouture regional finals

A group of students from Cashel are one of a handful of South Tipperary schools who have qualified for the regional finals of fashion competition Junk Kouture.

Junk Kouture is open to 12-19 year-olds and challenges young people to design, upcycle and create high end fashion from recycled materials.

The design is titled No M-Alice In This Palace and it was designed by Sarah Creed, Emma Hobbert and Alanna Manton, who are all transition year students at Cashel Community School.

The designers described the inspiration for their design to TipperaryLive.

"Alanna is the model who is seen featured in all the photos. We had been working very very hard on the design for a few weeks with the help and supervision of our art teacher Ailbe Dunne.

"The design is based on the Mad Hatter's tea party from Alice in Wonderland. Our idea originally started off with a nice tea party then we started to think of the most iconic tea party of them all. Most materials used to make up our dress are common materials found at tea parties, like the teabags, coffee pods and can tabs all things used for drinks served at a tea party. There are forks on the hat and roses on the skirt made out of fruit netting.

"The skirt's main item is made out of old books because Alice in Wonderland was originally a book before it was a movie. There is broken mirror throughout the outfit to represent Alice Through The Looking Glass. And then on the top all the colorful circles are made out of chopped up curtain pole.

"There is a variety of recycled objects used to make this to represent the madness of the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland. The title of our design is a play on the name of main character Alice, the message of the title is that there is no malice to be supported with our SDG, which means Good Health and Well-Being."

The girls will showcase their design at the regional finals on March 5 at the Helix Dublin.
