Motion sought for provision of student accommodation at Kickham Barracks in Tipperary

A request has been made for the provision of student accommodation at Kickham Barracks in Clonmel.

The request was made by Cllr Siobhan Ambrose at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District, the request asked that “this council engages with representatives from both TUS and TETB with a view of investigating the possibility of ringfencing a section of the site for the provision of student accommodation.”

The council responded that the plan for the development of Kickham Barracks was managed by a steering committee and that the identification of land for student accommodation is an ongoing process for TUS and that they are still in the process of speaking with the HEA about the issue. TUS are awaiting the outcome of HEA deliberations.

Cllr Ambrose stressed that the addition of student accommodation in Clonmel would help free up private houses for those struggling to rent homes in Clonmel. Cllr Ambrose said that she looks forward to the committee looking at relevant sites and said it would be a great help to parents if this motion were achieved.

There is a lot of unnecessary stress among students seeking relevant student accommodation in the county and this motion, if carried out, would be welcomed by these students studying in Tipperary and their families.
