Independent Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath has expressed deep frustration over the continued closure of the swimming pool at Ferryhouse, which has been out of operation since January 2025.
Deputy McGrath said that he is calling on Tusla and all relevant authorities to expedite repair works as a matter of urgency.
“This closure has gone on far too long. Hundreds of children and families in the local community have been affected, with many schools left without access to vital swimming lessons.

"This is not just a recreational issue—this is a public health and safety concern, as swimming is a critical life skill that many cannot access,” Deputy McGrath said.
Correspondence from Tusla to Deputy McGrath, dated June 19, confirmed that the facility was closed due to “significant mechanical and electrical issues,” and that a full report and costings are still awaited.
Deputy McGrath described this delay as “completely unacceptable” given the length of the closure and its ongoing impact on the community.

“We cannot allow a vital community facility to remain closed indefinitely while children are deprived of opportunities for development, learning and wellbeing, we have children waiting in excess of four years for swimming lessons locally and with the closure of Ferryhouse, this situation will deteriorate further,” McGrath added.
“I am calling on Tusla and the Department of Children to ensure that repairs are prioritised and progressed immediately. “It’s time to stop dragging feet. The Children of Clonmel and surrounding areas need access to Swimming lessons and this pool must be repaired without delay.” concluded McGrath.
