Work expected to start this month on new station in Clonmel

New garda station in Tipperary's largest town moves a step closer

The new station will be built on a site adjacent to the Kickham Plaza in Clonmel

The news that work on Clonmel’s new garda station is expected to commence this month has been welcomed.

Cllr Siobhán Ambrose says she is delighted to have received confirmation from the office of Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan that the final letter of intent has been issued to the successful contractor for the station.

She says it’s expected that the work will take just over two years to complete, with most of the construction work completed by November 2027.

The new station at the former Kickham Barracks site will replace the existing station in Emmet Street.

Cllr Ambrose extended her thanks to Minister Jim O’Callaghan, who she says has been working with her on this project as Justice spokesperson in opposition and recently as minister.

She also acknowledged the role of Garda Superintendent Niall O’Connell and members of An Garda Síochána, past and present, in Clonmel; as well as Sinead Carr, CEO of Tipperary County Council; Ger Walsh, all the council staff and members of Clonmel Borough Council, past and present, “for their huge work on this project down through the years”.

Meanwhile, Deputy Michael Murphy said that the Justice Minister had confirmed in direct correspondence to him that a letter of intent had been issued to a preferred tenderer, and that the Final Business Case had been completed and is with the Department for approval.

He said that works are expected to commence on site this September, with a construction period of 27 months.
Substantial completion is anticipated in November 2027.

Deputy Murphy said: “Since my election to the Dáil last November, I have made the redevelopment of Clonmel Garda Station a key priority.

“I am very pleased that, after consistent engagement with the Minister and his Department, we now finally have a clear timeline for the delivery of this vital project.

“Clonmel and the wider south Tipperary community deserve a modern, fit-for-purpose garda station that reflects the scale of policing needs in the region.

“This confirmation is a significant step forward.

“I will continue to work closely with the minister and the Office of Public Works to ensure this project progresses without delay,” Deputy Murphy added.
