Tipperary leads growth on electrical vehicle registrations according to new data

Tipperary came out on top with a 116% increase, with Offaly and Kerry following with increases of 86% and 65% respectively.

Tourists will stay away if no electric vehicle charging points available

Recent research shows that Tipperary has increased it's electrical vehicle registrations exponentially in Ireland.

Electric vehicle registrations in Ireland rose significantly in the first quarter of 2025, according to new analysis from Cartell.ie.

Based on SIMI data, the analysis highlights the surge in EV uptake, particularly in regional areas.

Tipperary led the growth, with registrations up 116% year-on-year. Offaly and Kerry followed, recording increases of 86% and 65% respectively.

According to SIMI, new car registrations have risen by 4% in 2025, with 64,824 registered vehicles to date versus 62,498 this time last year. Of these sales, EVs accounted for 9,978 vehicles, marking an increase of 26% from last year.

Almost all counties in Ireland experienced an increase in EV registrations, with only three counties - Leitrim, Longford and Roscommon - seeing no growth or a slight decline.

In terms of engine type market share to date in 2025, petrol leads at 27.85%, followed by hybrid (24.28%), diesel (16.73%), electric (15.39%), and plug-in hybrid (14.14%).

The top-selling EV brands so far in 2025 are Volkswagen, Kia, Hyundai, Tesla and Nissan, while the most popular models are the Volkswagen ID.4, Tesla Model 3, Kia EV3, Kia EV6 and Hyundai Kona.

Speaking on SIMI’s findings, Wesley Littleford, Commercial Operations Manager at Cartell.ie, notes, “It’s brilliant to see this positive news regarding EVs and the surge in regional sales this quarter. This data gives us a great indication of the vehicle preferences of Irish people and the shift in consumer behaviour that can happen within a year.
