LIVE: Tipperary community asked to help solve 42-year-old cold case

The family and gardaí urge anyone with information to help bring answers in the decades-old fatal hit-and-run case.
Tipperary gardaí and the Ivers family are appealing for information in regard to the fatal hit and run of 20-year-old Maurice Ivers outside Fethard, county Tipperary on April 16, 1983.
In an interview broadcast on RTÉ’s Crimecall on Monday night, the family spoke publicly for the first time about their search for answers. Maurice’s sisters, Josie Ivers and Marie Murphy, shared their memories and the lasting impact of his death.
Josie Ivers told RTÉ: “We think about him all the time. Where he was knocked down, we pass it every day of the week. That’s a reminder, so it has never left us. My mother and father were just absolutely uncontrollable. They were devastated, they couldn’t comprehend it.”
Marie Murphy said the family initially struggled with a lack of information surrounding her brother’s death.
“There weren’t any answers initially. You have to deal with that as well as the trauma of losing a child. I don’t think they were the same for a long time,” she said.
She added that it was only much later the family learned Maurice had been walking home when he was struck by a car and the driver failed to stop.
“How could someone leave somebody on the side of the road? My brother could have still been alive and nobody went to his aid,” she said.
“Just because it was 42 years ago, we’re dealing with this every day of the week. We just have to keep trying, we can’t just let it lie.”
Garda Brian Slattery, who also appeared on the programme, urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Somebody knows what has happened,” he said. “It’s highly possible that the answers lie locally.”
Garda Slattery urged anyone with information to please ring the Garda Confidential helpline on: 1800 666111.
“Any information, however insignificant it seems, will help us move this investigation forward,” he urged.
