The new Lidl development on Queen Street, Clonmel would have a major impact on traffic, a meeting of Clonmel Borough District has heard.
Cllr Niall Dennehy, who made that statement, also wanted to know if proper traffic management would be put in place so that there wouldn’t be “chaos” on the street.
District Mayor Pat English was also concerned that there would be “serious congestion” in the street when the retail development opens this year.
He knew that an extra lane of traffic would be provided coming down Queen Street, but said it would be “nearly impossible” for motorists to turn right when they were driving out of Bolton Street and St Oliver Plunkett Terrace.
The only solution he could see was the provision of traffic lights.
Cllr Michael Murphy said there were also proposals to bring more traffic from Irishtown into Queen Street.
District Engineer Roger Noonan said he was sure that a traffic assessment would have been carried out at the planning stage.
If measures to deal with the traffic were agreed he was sure they would be implemented.
District Manager Sinead Carr said they should see how it worked out once the new retail development is up and running.
If issues arose they would have to be managed.
