Planning permission has been granted for a significant redevelopment of facilities at the home of Fethard GAA Club in south Tipperary.

The club applied to Tipperary County Council seeking permission for a wide-ranging upgrade of its grounds and amenities at Fethard GAA Park, located at Saint Patrick’s Place in the town of Fethard.

The planning application, which was submitted on October 3, 2025, sought approval for a number of improvements aimed at modernising the club’s facilities for players, officials and spectators.

Among the key elements of the proposal was the construction of a new two-storey clubhouse building. The planned facility will include two dressing rooms along with shower and toilet facilities, a referees’ room, a meeting room, a medical and storage room, and a multi-purpose room intended for club and community use.

The development also includes the demolition of the existing spectator stand at the grounds and the construction of a new stand in its place.

Plans submitted to the council also sought permission for the installation of a new hurling wall, which would provide a dedicated training facility for players.

Further works outlined in the application include the installation of a new footpath and low-level perimeter fencing around the existing GAA pitch.

The club also proposed relocating the existing electronic scoreboard and moving the current ball-stop net as part of the overall site layout improvements.

The application also covered all associated site development works required to complete the project.

One of the notable aspects of the development is the historic setting of the site. The GAA grounds are bounded to the south by the Fethard Town Walls, which are listed as a Protected Structure under the Tipperary County Development Plan 2022–2028.

As a result, the proposed works were required to take account of the heritage importance of the nearby medieval walls when being assessed by planners.

Following consideration of the proposal, Tipperary County Council issued a decision on February 27, 2026 granting conditional planning permission for the development.

The decision means the council has approved the plans in principle but attached a number of planning conditions that must be complied with during the development process.

Such conditions typically relate to areas such as design details, construction management, heritage protection, and site works.

The approval clears the way for Fethard GAA Club to proceed with the proposed redevelopment, which is expected to significantly improve the facilities available at Fethard GAA Park for players, club members and supporters.

The project represents a major investment in local sporting infrastructure in Fethard, and will provide upgraded amenities for the club as it continues to serve the community into the future.
