'I've even tripped and it is dangerous,' calls for urgent repairs to Premier County street

Street is considered a major health and safety issue!

Necessary repairs to the road surface at William Street in Cashel are urgently required, Councillor Declan Burgess said at the February meeting of the Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District.

He said that the existing blocks are not an appropriate road surface and that the bricks are a major health and safety issue.

Cllr Burgess added that he was disappointed that there was no plan in place to fix the problem as it is a “town centre location” and blocks are not appropriate.

He said it needs to be put “into some sort of scheme going forward to actually do a proper surface on it and never put bricks back”, adding that many use the lane, which leads from O’Dwyers Pharmacy to the back of Supervalu and on to John Street.

A lot of accidents have taken place along the street.

“I’ve even tripped myself there and it is dangerous. Lots of residents have been raising the issue,” Cllr Burgess said before adding “urgently we need to get down there and fix the bricks”.

Councillor Moloney supported the call for repairs but felt that it does not qualify as a motion and suggested defining motions at meetings and finding a boundary between a CRM and a motion.

Councillor Burgess responded by saying that he wasn’t “looking for a pothole to be fixed” and added that he raised this as a CRM with the council since 2019 and the time has come to get the issue resolved.

Councillor Roger Kennedy seconded the motion while pointing out that “cars can only come down on one track and that track has subsided”.

He said that he had consulted with engineers and overseers for years about William Street yet the job still has not been completed.

“It’s one waiting for claims,” Councillor Kennedy said before adding: “I hope Councillor Burgess didn’t have any repercussions relating to his fall on the bricks.”

The area will now be assessed and patch repairs will be carried out to defective bricks as required.
