Munster hurling championship is blown wide open as Clare beat Limerick

Munster hurling championship is blown wide open as Clare beat Limerick

The munster championship is wide open now as Tipp, Clare and Limerick are all on one win each

Sensational is a word oft applied to Munster hurling and tonight the word is apt again as Clare beat Limerick to win their first game in this year's championship. GAA followers will lament the game not being on terrestrial tv as it was an epic hurling clash that would have widened hurling's reach had it had a wider audience.

The drive of Clare set the tone. Brian Lohan was driven after last week's defeat to Tipperary where Clare shipped five goals and his team responded in style to register an epic 1-24 to 2-20 win over the reigning champions in front of a vocal 30,000 crowd. The hurling lived up to the sensational. Seamus Flanagan goaled late on to give Limerick some hope but Clare were immense all night and held out for a season changing one point win to send Limerick to their first championship defeat since 2019.

Limerick lost Sean Finn and Cian Lynch to injury at the half way stage and both were immense losses as the momentum swayed to Clare and Brian Lohans side saw the game out by a point which blows the Munster championship wide open. Clare conceded five goals to Tipp last weekend but were more awake this time and alert to danger. They were more rounded and had David Fitzgerald, who was suspended for the Tipp game, back in the middle. John Conlon was superb for them after leaving his brother's wedding to play the match. The vibe was good for them as the win now means that Clare, Tipp and Limerick have all registered a win a piece.

Tomorrow Waterford and Cork clash in what is expected to be another close game and then Tipp and Cork buzz into action a week later. Every team is in with a chance now. Liam Cahill was an interested onlooker this evening and his Tipp team will have Limerick to come after the Cork game. Once the dust settles Limerick will need to find another gear.

Limerick will have that time to regroup before their next game against Tipperary, in 3 weeks, and the break this week will be welcomed by John Kiely's side. Injury concerns are mounting so he will hope to have Sean Finn and Cian Lynch back fit again soon.

The championship is wide open. All hail the Munster championship. All to play for and more to come.
