Age and Opportunity has marked the distribution of its Active National Grant that provides significant funding for sport and physical activity amongst older people.
The grant scheme is a combined initiative from Age and Opportunity and Sport Ireland. This year it is providing €16,360 to 47 groups in Tipperary.
Nationwide, €317,430 is being awarded to 909 organisations, ranging from active retirement groups to sports clubs and nursing and day care centres.
The successful Tipperary groups are:
Aras Mhuire Day Care Centre, Fethard Regional Community Sport and Recreational Campus CLG, Tipperary Knights, Irish Country Women's Association, Faugheen ICA, Duhill Community Council, Annacarty/Donohill Active Retirement Association (ARA), Brothers of Charity Active Retirement, Borrisokane Athletic Club, Rathkeevan Guild ICA, Fountainstown Community Sports Club, Clonmel Golf Club and Rockwell Rovers LGFC.
They also include Cahir Active Retirement, Puckane and Carrig Ageing People Association, Thurles ICA, Golden Years Day Care Centre, Borrisoleigh Active Social Club, Knockgraffan ICA, Tipperary Sports Partnership, Golden/Kilfeacle ICA, Bramleigh Lodge Nursing Home, Killaloe Ballina Tennis Club, Silver Arch Family Resource Centre, Pattersons Nursing Home and Fethard Guild ICA.
Also included are Tipperary COPD Support, Cloughjordan ICA, Powerstown/Lisronagh ICA, Vee Valley Care Centre, Cappawhite ARA, Ballinaclough ICA Guild, Templemore ARA, Nenagh ARA, Cashel Day Care Centre, Cashel and District ARA, Mount Bruis Women's Group, Ballyporeen ICA, Kilsheelan and Kilcash ARA, Irish Wheelchair Association Tipperary, Moycarkey ICA, Carrick-on-Suir ICA, Gallally ARA, Ballingeary ICA, Templemore Athletic Club, Clogheen Mens Shed and Grangemockler ARA.
Minister of State with special responsibility for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne, said: “Today’s funding announcement is very welcome news. The Age and Opportunity Active National Grant Scheme has already had a positive impact on communities across Ireland and has contributed towards improving the opportunities for older people to get involved in sports and physical activity.
"As a Government, we want to see older people helped to be more active and this year’s funding will support sports clubs, Irish Countrywomen’s Association Guilds and Active Retirement Associations in meeting that goal”.
