The feeling of home - Fr Brendan Meagher with a sliotar in hand
A successful fundraising event in aid of the Reverend Fr. Brendan Meagher, who hails from Templemore, and whose family originates from Annfield, Bouladuff, The Ragg, took place on Sunday, July 9 in Templederry. Brendan works as a missionary priest in Fortaleza, Brazil since 1985. The wonderful late Fr. Matt Ryan originally from Cooleen, Templederry worked on various missionary projects with Fr. Brendan in Brazil.
The coffee morning resulted in a huge collection of funds (€5,053), lots of chats and laughter, and fabulous home baking from neighbours and friends, which contributed to the successful event.
Ten years ago in Fortaleza, Brazil, Fr. Brendan discovered two children abandoned by their parents outside his parish house. In collaboration with the children’s family and friends, Fr. Meagher accepted the responsibility in taking care of Clarissa (13) and Cecilya (11), namely their maintenance and education. The late Fr. Matt Ryan was part of the team to which the children were entrusted. The children live with their grandmother in a tiny house.
According to Fr. Brendan, they are unspoilt and excellent students. Education and maintenance for the two girls is costing about €350 per month. They are excelling in their education and at such a young age realise this is their ticket to a better life. The next number of years in education and good care means they will be able to enter university and may even qualify for a scholarship.
Fr. Brendan would like to thank all those who contributed and was overjoyed to be part of the coffee morning in Templederry.
