There was a very special day in Grange National School recently when past pupil, Fine Gael Senator Garret Ahearn, returned to his roots to perform the official opening of the new extension.

Senator Ahearn was invited by the school Principal Marie Keating and the Board of Management. He was joined by the Bishop of Waterford and Lismore, Alphonsus Cullinan and local Parish Priest Fr Michael Toomey.

Senator Ahearn said “It is a real privilege to be here with you at Grange National School for the official opening of the new extension.

“Education is really important to all of us. Going to school and getting an education is how we all build better lives for our friends, for ourselves and for our families.

“Every time I visit a school, I am inspired by the students I meet. Today is no different. It is great to see your enthusiasm for learning. I hope you keep your curiosity to always learn more and to try new things”.

He acknowledged the hard work of the staff, saying “keeping all of this teaching and learning going requires exceptionally committed and dedicated staff, so thank you to your teachers and the school staff for their energy, commitment and dedication.

“It is lovely to see so many of them here today and it is an important opportunity to thank them for their hard work in making today a reality. Their commitment provides an education in a positive, safe and encouraging environment”.

The Principal of Grange National School, Marie Keating said “We are delighted with our new classroom and extended refurbished yard spaces.

“We thank Fr Michael Toomey for blessing the classroom and to Senator Garret Ahearn for performing the official opening.

“Garret is a native of Grange and a past pupil. His father Liam has given 36 years service to Grange NS Board of Management. Garret’s late mother, Teresa Ahearn TD, is fondly remembered in Grange for her commitment to the community and school in Grange”.
