The sod was turned on the new Serenity Garden at the Hospital of the Assumption.
The Community Hospital of the Assumption in Thurles marked a significant milestone on Monday of this week with the turning of the sod for a new palliative care garden, a project designed to provide comfort and serenity for patients and their families.
Theresa Corbett, chairperson of the Glitz and Groove community women’s project, told the Tipperary Star about the initiative’s profound purpose.
“Today is a really important day, and we’re creating a serenity garden for palliative patients - a place for families to gather their thoughts and find peace during difficult times,” she said.
The project was blessed by Father Vincent Stapleton, adding a meaningful touch to the occasion. Some of the staff and guests gathered for the occasion which marked the start of the construction.
The garden will feature various elements, including flowers and a gazebo, providing a tranquil space for reflection and solace.
The idea originated from a personal experience; Theresa lost her brother, Tom, in 2019. “He received exceptional care here, and as an outdoor person, heliked to walk in the grass and feel the breeze. He loved being in nature. I felt compelled to give back to the community in his memory,” she explained.
The Glitz and Groove committee, formed by women who have also faced cancer journeys, played a pivotal role in fundraising efforts.
A successful fundraiser held in December 2023 provided essential support for the project.
“Without the community’s backing and the hard work of our committee, this garden wouldn’t have come to fruition,” Theresa added.
Local contractors, including John O'Shaughnessy of Clancy Construction and architect Sean Ryan, are collaborating on the garden’s design and implementation.
The aim is to have the garden completed by the end of April, providing a beautiful and comforting environment for those in need.
As the community unites to support this heartfelt initiative, the new garden promises to be a sanctuary for patients and families at The Hospital of the Assumption, embodying hope and healing during challenging times.
