More than 1,100 people visited the inaugural artisan food and craft market at Carrick-on-Suir's Ormond Castle on Saturday, July 19 and a second market is planned at the historic site during National Heritage Week next month.

The market was organised by the Explore Carrick-on-Suir tourism initiative and ran from 11am until 4pm on July 19 with 1,135 people visiting the castle that day and 47 people taking part in the outdoor yoga sessions held in conjunction with the event, Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting heard last Thursday.

District Administrator Marie Cox said the event was supported by the Council’s outdoor staff for traffic management on Castle Street.

She said further markets will take place at the Castle on Saturday, August 16 during National Heritage Week and on Saturday, September 27 to coincide with the Tour de France L'Etape Cycling Festival in the town.

Ms Cox praised the turnout for the inaugural Ormond Castle market given that it took place on a weekend where the focus was on other events.

Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Chairman Cllr David Dunne, who attended the market, said it was another “fantastic achievement” for his hometown.

“It clashed with a number of other things and the weather wasn’t the best but it was the first testing of the waters for this venture and there will be a number of other days coming up,” he said in reference to the two upcoming markets.
