Retail the largest industrial sector in Co. Tipperary - Census 2016

The Central Statistics Office has published its final Census 2016 report, focusing on employment, occupations and industry. 

In relation to Co. Tipperary, the report shows that in April 2016, the largest industrial sector in the premier county was wholesale and retail trade, accounting for 8,731 workers (13.8%). Manufacturing was the next largest, with 8,691 workers (13.7%).

The top five was completed by human health and social work activities (11.1%), agriculture, forestry and fishing (10.6%) and education (9.2%).

The 6,740 persons working in the agriculture, forestry and fishing sector was 152 fewer than in 2011 (-2.2%). Tipperary was one of just three counties where this sector accounted for over 10.0% of those at work (Cavan and Monaghan being the others). A further 3,352 persons (5.3%) worked in construction, compared with 3,214 five years previously.

Unemployment in Co. Tipperary was 10,867, giving an unemployment rate of 14.6%, compared with 19.9% in April 2011.

Nationally, the unemployment rate recorded by Census 2016 was 12.9%. Of the unemployed in the county, 1,056 (9.7%) were first-time job seekers.

Among Tipperary’s unemployed, 84.7% were Irish nationals, compared with 84.8% in 2011, while 15.3% were non-Irish nationals, up slightly from 15.2% five years previously.
