€70,000 set aside for repairs to Carrick-on-Suir bridge this year 

Tipperary Co. Council has set aside €70,000 funding to repair scour damage on Carrick-on-Suir's Dillon Bridge this summer. 

The Council also plans to carry out repairs to some of the bridge's railings but may need to seek more funding to do this work.

 Carrick-on-Suir Cllr Kieran Bourke highlighted the condition of the railings as quite dangerous and a health and safety risk to the public at a recent meeting of Carrick-n-Suir Municipal District councillors.  

District Engineer Willie Corby said the Council expects the bridge rehabilitation project to take place in late summer/early autumn. 

He explained that the Council must first submit an assessment report in relation to the environment impact the project will have on the river bed. The report may have to be referred to An Bord Pleanala.

Scouring is the removal of river sediment from around the abutements and piers of bridges by fast moving water, which can compromise the integrity of the bridge's structure. 

Dillon Bridge was originally built around 1880 and was reconstructed and widened in 1975. It was named after the prominent Irish Parliamentary Party MP John Dillon.
