Tipperary to benefit from €4.5m funding package for various projects around the county

Several Tipperary heritage projects are set to receive significant funding in the coming months after a big funding drive was announced by the Government this week.

Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, today announced that 95 heritage projects across the country will benefit from a total of €4.5m under this year’s Historic Structures Fund (HSF), with €107,300 being awarded to four projects in Tipperary.

Projects in need of repair in towns like Cahir and Thurles are earmarked for an influx of funding, with Suir Mills and Alta Villa in Cahir and the T Mason Building on Friar Street Thurles all about to undergo refurbishment.

The HSF is one of two built heritage funding schemes which work in partnership with owners and the 31 local authorities to protect our built heritage – a key aim of Heritage Ireland 2030, the new national heritage plan launched by the Minister last year. Today’s announcement follows the awarding earlier this month of €4.5m in funding under the Department’s other built heritage grant scheme – the Built Heritage Investment Scheme.

By providing grants of between €15,000 and €200,000, the HSF assists owners of heritage structures – including those on the local authorities’ Record of Protected Structures and those in Architectural Conservation Areas – to meet their obligations to care for their properties.

Tipperary locations as part of the funding below:

Suir Mills, Cahir: funding of €45,000 for urgent repairs to save the roof structure from collapse and the original slates from falling, involving full scaffold, carpenters, roofers, and leadworkers.
Alta Villa, Cahir: funding of €37,500 for repairs to the roofs and chimneys, and repairs to gutters and brackets, with painting of ornate brackets.
T Mason Building, Friar Street, Thurles: funding of €14,800 for the repair to the front of the rendered facade, repair of full shop front, including windows and doors.
