Tipperary sprinter Katie Bergin led from the gun to the finish line and wins the gold medal!

Katie Bergin won a quality race in real style as she led all the way

A new star from mid Tipperary is rising on the athletics front. Katie Bergin has been totting up wins in recent months and once more she showed what she can do on the national stage as she stormed to victory in the National U/23 100m Final in Tullamore yesterday.

The Moyne Athletic Club member was in top form and set out her stall early on by winning her heat in a -0.4m/s wind, and from there prepared for the medals and the glory.

The disciplined and talented Tipperary athlete lined up in the final against Irish Senior International and American College based athlete, Adeyemi Talabhi of Longford AC who is a formidable runner and it came down to a dual between the best.

Katie focused on the task at hand and led from the gun to finish line to win by five hundreds of a second in the national final and unleash scenes of great joy. She finished in a quality time of 12.09s again against an ever increasing -0.9m/s wind to claim the glory.

It was a remarkable achievement as the dedicated sprinter claimed her first outdoor individual track and field gold medal.

Two hours later Katie lined up in the 200m Final and came within two tenths of a second of winning the double, not to be on this occasion taking silver in 24.88s. Congrats Katie, what an impressive achievement!
