Jackie Cahill welcomes major investment in Tipperary outdoor projects

Tipperary tourism: Shannon masterplan to lift all boats on Lough Derg

Lough Derg is a jewel in the crown

Local Fianna Fáil TD Jackie Cahill has said two north Tipperary outdoor projects are set to benefit from almost €100,000 under the Government’s Rural Development policy.

Tipperary County Council has been given the go-ahead for the Garrykennedy inner harbour upgrade and Roscrea riverside improvement project.

Each project will receive almost €50,000. The funding will be used for consultancy services to undertake planning and design works for the upgrading of the inner harbour in Garrykennedy as well as the consultantancy for detailed design, planning and feasibility for a series of connected spaces along the riverside in Roscrea.

The project are among 50 new outdoor recreation projects given the go-ahead by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys at a total cost of €2.3 million.

“This funding of almost €100,000 for two projects in north Tipperary is hugely welcome,” Deputy Cahill said. “Both tourists and locals are set to benefit from the Government's investment in rural Ireland.

“The upgrade of Garrykennedy inner harbour on Lough Derg is very important as it is a very popular tourist destination. Plans for a series of connected spaces along the riverside in Roscrea would improve connectivity and allow more people to enjoy the riverside.”

He added: “A total of €2.3 million has been allocated to outdoor projects in this latest funding under the Government's Rural Development policy, Our Rural Future.

“It demonstrates the Government's commitment to rural Ireland and Fianna Fáil in Government will continue to ensure our local communities receive investment.”

The funding, under the Government’s Rural Development policy, “Our Rural Future”, aims to support preparatory work required to bring large scale outdoor recreation projects to a shovel-ready stage.

The investment through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) will be key to enhancing our outdoor amenities such as our walkways, cycleways, rivers, lakes and beaches across the country in the coming years.

The projects, once completed, will also provide a major boost to local economies by attracting visitors and furthering our reputation as a destination for adventure tourism.
