Tipperary student wins national carbon monoxide safety competition

Jessica O’Brien from sixth class at Bunscoil na Catharach in Cahir, has won a nationwide poster competition, designed to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning in homes.

Gas Networks Ireland, in partnership with Junior Achievement Ireland, called for entries to its carbon monoxide safety poster competition.

Students who completed the ‘Energize’ Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics educational programme were eligible to enter.

Jessica's poster impressed the judges, outlining the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning and the crucial role of carbon monoxide alarms in our homes.

Speaking as she presented Bunscoil na Catharach with an iPad for use in their school classroom, Gas Networks Ireland’s Social Sustainability Manager, Gráinne O’Reilly said: “Students like Jessica expressed her creative thinking to outline carbon monoxide safety. Her poster not only educates but motivates us all to prioritise safety measures in our homes. Huge congratulations to Jessica.”

The Energize programme fosters a love for science in primary school students across Ireland by combining practical and engaging lessons.

Carbon monoxide awareness is a core component of the programme.

Yvonne Fahy, Bunscoil na Catharach’s sixth class teacher said: “The Energize programme provided a great opportunity for students to get involved in STEAM subjects in a way that sparks their curiosity for science. It was incredibly rewarding to witness them explore the world of science in such a fun and engaging manner.”
